Emergency Assistance Programs

There are Government funded programs that will provide temporary emergency assistance for those that need it.

Emergency Food and Shelter Program is administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management . The grants supplement and support efforts that provide food and shelter to homeless and needy people. The are given to nonprofit community and governmental organizations, as determined by representatives from local government, religious and secular nonprofit groups, service providers and at least one homeless or formerly homeless person.

The awards, given through FEMA in compliance with the 1983 McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, can be used in local communities for shelters, meals, food distribution through food pantries, and one-time rent, mortgage, or utility assistance. The funds are designed to help individuals and families with non- disaster temporary emergency needs.

Since its inception in 1983 EFSP ( Emergency Food and Shelter Program) has distributed over 2 billion in more than 2500 cities and counties.

With the help of over 11,500 local non-profit,faith based and government agencies, Emergency Assistance provides Meals, shelter, utility payments rent and mortgage payments.

The national board members of nonprofit organizations that distribute these funds are

  • American Red Cross
  • United Jewish Charities
  • Catholic Charities
  • Salvation Army

Since 1983 the Emergency Food and Shelter Program has distributed over $2 billion in more than 2,500 cities and counties.

In fiscal year 2001 with funding of $140 million,the emergency food and shelter program provided

  • 89.2 million meals
  • 4.2 million nights of shelter
  • 192,328 utility payments
  • 160,442 rent and mortgage payments
